The average coal demand growth during the last decade was over 700,000 tpd. As this growth has been regionally imbalanced, the coal market landscape has changed.Behind oil but ahead of natural gas, coal is the second most important primary energy source. Over the past decade hard coal consumption has increased by more than 70%, from 3.7 billion t in 2000 to an estimated 6.3 billion t in 2010. However, coal demand growth is heterogeneous: while coal consumption is stagnating in the OECD, the surge in global coal consumption is mostly driven by China and India.
