The impact and influence of China on the global coal market is evolving. The present dominance of China in the world coal economy is clear: the statistics speak for themselves. Currently, almost 90% of China's energy originates from carbon-intensive fossil fuels such as coal, crude oil and natural gas, of which coal currently accounts for approximately 70%.China has now overtaken the US as the world's biggest energy user and accounts for nearly 50% of global coal consumption. China generates most of its electricity from coal, while the US generates energy mostly from oil. Chinese consumption and production of coal accounted for nearly two-thirds of global growth in both categories in 2010.
