Urgency for CCS

Coal currently provides 25% of the world's primary energy consumption and 40% of the world's electricity. Its use will continue to grow, accounting for 45% of electricity production in 2030 according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) reference scenario. But with the global movement to cut CO_2 emissions, its potential as a low carbon option in the future power generation mix will depend on the deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.
