Despite the convergence of communication technologies, the unusual environment of an underground coal mine dictates that any optimum overall communication solution can be best achieved with a combination of technologies. In the past, three or four systems would be needed to ensure adequate safety and management communications were in place, and though the idea of a "silver bullet", where one system does everything, sounds good in theory, the physical environment of an underground mine means this is some way off.
