As an example, Figure 1 illustrates a business critical planning process for allocating exposed coal from the mine plan to create required customer products. Whilst the coal processing and mine planning personnel complete the process, site knowledge of how coal is allocated is captured and made available across other business processes in the form of business rules. Mining companies are continuously looking to improve productivity in all areas of the business. There are several drivers for this, including increasing competition and business expansion. Recently, however, the unstable economic environment has also been a major driver. The after-effect of the global financial crisis is being felt far and wide with businesses still taking action to contain costs in the short-term and reduce costs in the long-term. Productivity improvement is the catalyst for organisational change that requires immediate attention; however changes will only be sustainable through continual BPM. Simply, improvements are about "doing the right thing at the right time."
