Think of Canada and you will probably imagine the Rocky Mountains. Under those jagged mountains, particularly in British Columbia, the westernmost province of Canada, are coalfields that hold billions of tons of high quality met coal. While the store is rich, most of Canada's coal lies at depths of 300 m or more. Deep underground oal mining is rare in Canada, with only two underground coal mines still operating. The geology of coalfields in the foothills of the Rockies is characterised by folds and thrusts, which can make mining difficult, even when it is closer to the surface.
