The design of the haul roads also need to be compatible with the rubber compounds of the tyres being used on the machines of that particular site. Tyres are intricately designed components. While they may appear to some to simply be large masses of rubber, the technology behind mining tyres is very significant and is tailored to the needs of specific applications and work environments. For example, certain rubber compounds that are used in the tread and sidewall areas are better suited for short hauls, while some compounds are designed for longer hauls. If tyres with specific compounds are used in the wrong application, the tyres can be damaged to the point that they are no longer serviceable.
