What is clear, however, is that if production expansion targets are met, then new transport systems will need to be devised that keep Indonesian coal prices competitive in export markets. For PT Adaro Energy, the country's second largest producer, overcoming the infrastructure challenges will be critical as the company looks to make ambitious production jumps, according to Adrian Lembong, general manager for business development. The company invested heavily in its supply chain capabilities pre-2005, which allowed it to boost output from 26.7 million t in 2004 to 36.1 million t last year. A similar volume is forecast for this year, but by 2012 the company expects to be producing 80 million t of its Envirocoal brand of low sulphur coal, 30 percent of which will be supplied to domestic markets, the same proportion as now, with the rest made available for export markets.
