Sustainable reclamation by design

Formerly used by Mitteldeutsche Braunkohlengesellschaft mbH (MIBKAG) for lignite mining, the 40 ha. area, previously known as 'dump number 1104', has been transformed into a tranquil haven for community recreation and relaxation. Neighbouring municipalities helped to design the Grossstolpen recreation area northwest of the United Schleenhain Mine, according to a representative of the company's lignite coal operation south of Leipzig, Germany: "We base our reclamation efforts on technical expertise and responsibility. That means involving the community in our land reclamation planning. We enjoy hearing everyone's opinions and are open to suggestions."
