Located in the Arctic Circle at 78 deg N, the Svea Nord longwall mine in Norway is one of the most northerly coal mines in the world. Current geological conditions at the mine featured a high stress component allied to weak layered sedimentary rock which placed large demands on the rock support system. A stronger, more rigid system was required to counter these new high stress sections. To ensure the correct rock bolting system was installed and be adequate for use throughout the whole mine, pull out tests were carried out, using several different types of bolt and grouting methods.
