Mine shafts ire the most important constructions of any underground mine. It is therefore standard practice to regularly check mine shafts by carrying out geodetic control measurements. In this article the world's only inertial measurement system for surveying shafts is presented. This system is capable of quickly and accurately measuring the profile of a shaft and the installations in it. Its measuring speed reduces the idle time of shaft operations to a minimum. Compared to usual techniques, the measurement is 10 times faster, 10 times more accurate and results are in a reliable absolute co-ordinate each 5 cm until the bottom is reached. This article describes how the system works and how it is used in operation by referring to examples in Germany and Australia.
