The demand for power and steel, and thus for coal, is rising on a worldwide basis. Between 2004 and 2005, it rose globally by 5 percent, in Asia by 8.2 percent, and in China by 10.9 percent. In many places, capacity bottlenecks are almost the order of the day, and in spite of extensive investment into public utility infrastructure (inland transport, port capacities), this tendency will further increase. Hence, in order to ensure a smooth energy supply and production, coal stockyard management considerations are gaining in importance. Stackers and reclaimers, being the principal components of a stockyard, are playing an integral role in this development. A maximum of efficiency is not only achieved by the selection of the appropriate type of equipment, advanced stockyard management is a complex process system, which offers high optimisation potential through customised solutions from one integrated source. Using the example of the coal stockyard at the 3 X 700 MW power plant in Manjung, Malaysia, this report is intended to demonstrate how an optimum interaction and synchronisation of individual plant components is achieved, and which synergies can be achieved by employing the latest advances in technology.
