While raising the sides of the bin is the most popular option it does have the effect of changing the centre of gravity of the machine, and thereby its stability. By comparison, lengthening the chassis is relatively expensive and could affect the value of the machine on the secondhand market. The same holds true for the box-shaped bin. As a result some of Bell Equipment's customers have foregone these options in favour of a trailer with a second bin. The company's engineers have designed a specialised low profile cab option for the D-series trucks to cater for mines with reduced height clearance. The height of the cab has been cut by 230 mm yet still retails all operator comforts as well as ROPS/FOPS certification. Today the company remains active in the South African coal mining industry, which attributes for a large portion of the company's local ADTs sales. In the UK, Bell Equipment has 20 special coal bodied ADTs working in a long haul application at three locations for Scottish Coal. These units have been in service for over two years and each have approximately 7500 hours on the clock. In the UK, coal body modification is carried out locally on a design and build basis.
