According to a report recently issued by the National Coal Mine Safety Administration Bureau's Dispatch Centre, Chinese coal output reached 1.608 billion t last year. This was an increase of 215 million t (or 15.2 percent) compared to 2002. Of this total, state-owned mines produced 808 million t, of which local state-owned mines produced 283 million t and township and village-owned mines produced 517 million t. Table 1 shows total coal production from 2000-2003. After more than 10 years of hard work, the state-owned mines system has developed 134 high-production coal mines. These have produced 366.35 million t of raw coal, 51.5 percent of the total output of state-owned mines in 2002. The fatality rate at these mines is 0.082/million t of coal produced. Average profit is approximately 7.5 million US dollars per mine, with 35 mines registering a profit of more than 14.5 million US dollars.
