China's emergence as the world's top coal producer has been driven to a large part by the development of high-capacity underground longwall mines. In addition, as Chinese coal mining companies have become more experienced in using this type of system, the trend has been towards its introduction into thicker and thicker seams, which in turn has required the installation of larger shearers, taller roof supports and more robust face-conveying technology.
