In 2010, New Zealand produced 5.3 million t of coal, with approximately 50% exported for use in steel production. The South Island's west coast accounted for over 50% of total coal production, with 75% sourced from opencast mines. New Zealand's bituminous coal is recognised globally for its low ash and low sulfur content.
