AUSTRALIA Giant Galilee basin mining project receives federal approval

GVK Power & Infrastructure, the Indian energy giant, has received environmental approval for a huge coal project in Queensland. The Alpha and Alpha West opencast coal projects will enable the company to mine and export around 32 million tpa of low ash, low sulfur thermal coal from the untapped Galilee basin to India and other energy-hungry markets across Asia. The project also involves the construction and operation of a 500 km railway line connecting the coal mines to the Port of Abbot Point.
