INDONESIA - Government to impose export tax on thermal coal

After months of speculation, the director general of foreign trade has confirmed that Indonesia will apply an export tax on thermal coal. The country had previously announced a tax on other minerals but it was unclear if coal was to be included. Indonesia's previous attempt to tax coal exports was blocked in court by the mining industry. "We have come to the conclusion that coal has to be subjected to export tax," Deddy Saleh announced at the end of April.
