South Africa's coal industry received little comfort at the Coaltrans South Africa conference in June. The industry is still uncertain of the impact of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP2010), the plan to phase out coal-fired power generation by power utility Eskom. Further, the country's export trade is still capped well below its potential by the failure of Transnet, the rail utility, to move enough coal.
