The UK Government has abandoned plans to convert a Scottish power plant into the country's first carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility. Chris Huhne, the UK energy secretary, confirmed in late October that the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) had failed to reach a deal with power companies over the project, which would have seen CO_2 emissions from Longannet power plant captured and piped into permanent geological storage under the North Sea.
