To the dismay of environmentalists, Southeast Asia's coal mining industry is finding favour with investors and analysts on a combination of: rising prices, growing demand from domestic users (as well as China and India), constrained regional supply and prospects for mergers and acquisitions in the months ahead. The region's leading coal producer is Indonesia, followed by Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. These countries are also developing an appetite for using coal to generate power.
