The value of South African primary minerals exports is forecast to increase by 7 percent /year to 35 million US dollars/year by 2011, compounded from 23 million US dollars in 2006. The sector contributing most to this growth will be coal, which, according to the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs (DME), will grow at an average of 11.4 percent /year. By 2011, coal's share of mineral exports will rise to 18 percent, up from 13.5 percent in 2006. "This increase in forecast export volumes is based mainly on the increased number of exporting mines being created as a result of the implementation of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and the willingness of the big coal companies to allow black economic empowerment companies (BEEs) to mine coal blocks in their mining concession areas," the Department's latest reports say.
