The challenge for Orica is how to introduce new ideas to a customer base that has been wedded to a 'bigger is better' way of doing business for two generations of management. From Orica's perspective, over the last few years it has successfully developed the i-kon electronic blasting system and has introduced a number of new products, such as Flexigel~(TM). From an industry perspective, there has not been much in the way of radical new developments for open pit, coal mines in recent times other than that they have got bigger. In the absence of industry sponsored research and development, Stratablast may provide a new source of innovation for the industry.
