Recent US events and the international coal market

The US thermal coal market represents a highly interdependent system with critical production from a number of sub-regions scattered throughout the three major US coal supply regions. While the direct interrelationship between the US thermal coal market and the international seaborne markets is not obvious, the flexibility of shifting high volatile coal between the domes tic thermal and seaborne coking coal markets is the link that bridges the gap between the US and international markets, resulting in a single, dynamic coal market.
