Silicosis Pneumosis is a respiratory disease caused by inhalation of silica dust that leads to inflammation and permanent scarring of the lung tissue. It is arguably one the most prolific industrial killers of all time and is particularly indigenous to the mining profession. The condition was first noted as far back as Hippocrates (460 BC) & Pliny (AD 70) who noted a link between dust and progressive lung disease. Over the centuries, Silicosis has been described and diagnosed in the following variety of locations: In the 1550s, Georgious Agricola, the German medical doctor, who is also known as the father of geology as an academic discipline, addressed the occupational hazards of lung disease in mines.
