Coal is the most abundant fossil energy source and the least expensive of the world's fossil fuels, with less price volatility than natural gas or oil. Since China, India, the former Soviet States and the US have large coal reserves and are investing in new coal-fired generation, it is likely that coal will continue to be used as a major fuel source, despite long-standing environmental concerns.
