Having studied best mining practises, MS&R began production in 1989 to provide coal to Alabama's metallurgical coal market. Earlier this year the company commissioned a PC3000 Super Shovel from Komatsu America Corp. Outfitted with a backhoe attachment and a 21 yd~3 bucket, MS&R's PC3000 is currently one of the largest mining excavators working in the state of Alabama. The company decided five years ago to use larger mining equipment. The costs of labour, blasting, fuel and materials were increasing at the time, so the company started running larger, more efficient machines. They generated more yardage and production per hour, significantly reducing costs. Each time the company has increased equipment size, its mining costs have been reduced.
