The South Wales Ports, with the exception of Port Talbot harbour, were constructed to export massive volumes of coal from the South Wales deep mines at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today the ports are still used for the export of anthracite, produced by Celtic Energy and Tower Colliery, but their main focus is on the import of coal and coke for the steel and power generation markets. The three main coal handling ports of Swansea, Port Talbot and Newport offer a full range of facilities for handling coaster to cape sized vessels. It is this ability to assist with the importer's every requirement that has made South Wales ports a key location for coal importers, allowing them to take advantage of opportunities in the market place for short-sea and deep-sea cargoes.
