Economic Benefits of Proper Maintenance in an Oil Refinery

An oil refinery has a great variety of equipment ranging from motors, pumps, and turbines (hereafter called "moving machinery") to tanks, piping, towers, vessels, and boilers (called "stationary equipment"). All of the equipment is necessary to operate the plant, and the utmost attention is paid to maintenance because, if by chance trouble has occurred, there is an element of danger that it will develop into a serious accident. Because in recent years capital investment is being held back and there is a higher awareness related to safety, the maintenance procedure also has become able to advance more logically and comprehensively. The technology that supports the maintenance of this new age is scheduled maintenance, that is, reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) and risk-based inspection (RBI). In addition, to put maintenance work into practice according to plan, the site's enhanced awareness is indispensable, and autonomous maintenance activity also plays an important role. In this report, based on example, the actual state of scheduled maintenance and autonomous maintenance and the economic effect of maintenance in an oil refinery are introduced.
