Up-To-Date Technology for Reducing Oil Consumption

The fuel consumption of recently made automobile engines has been remarkably improved as compared with the fuel consumption of engines manufactured 10 years ago. The persistent challenge of car makers resulted in remarkable improvements of both the level of noise and livability and the appearance of advanced engines and automobiles. Also, the tension of piston rings, which exerts a strong influence on fuel consumption, has been significantly reduced. Ten years ago, the total tension divided by the cylinder diameter was 0.65 N/mm. The parameter has been reduced by more than a half the previous level in engines developed quite recently, to about 0.3 N/mm. A possibility of achieving such low tensions made it possible to develop the technology of oil consumption reduction. Figure 1 shows the relationship between the piston speed and the oil consumption for gasoline engines in 10 years, from 1993 to 2003. Despite a decrease in the tension, oil consumption has been reduced as a result of implementing different devices.
