Improvement in the Lubricious Characteristics of Diesel Fuel Injection Pumps by CrN Coating Application

In recent years, the automotive industry has required a reduction of size and weight for diesel fuel injection pumps. At the same tune, these pumps are also being required to have high-pressure injection to decrease the amount of harmful substances they produce. In order to meet these requirements the lubrication condition is getting more severe in these parts, and wear and sticking problems are occurring in diesel pumps. Using conventional technologies, such as heat treatment and plating, to solve these problems is not enough for current tribology demands. So we focused on a coating technology that uses PVD and applied a CrN coating to diesel pump products and produced diesel pumps with this coating. Currently we are producing over 1 million parts commercially with a CrN coating each year. In order for us to be able to do this, the following steps were taken to ensure this technology would be successful in mass production.
