In this study, some experiments were first carried out to clear the tangential micro-displacement characteristics of contacted ceramic surfaces of ZrO{sub}2, Al{sub}2O{sub}3 and Si{sub}3N{sub}4 together with SiC. Next, comparisons were made of the experimental results with those estimated from approximate equations introduced previously. The main results obtained are as follows: (1) Experimental values of tangential stiffness rg at the start of increasing the tangential force are close to those calculated by the equations. (2) Experimental values of tangential displacement δ{sub}(cmax) at the start of macro slip are greater than those calculated by the equations. This may be caused by tangential plastic deformation which is not taken into consideration in introducing the equations. (3) Experimental results show qualitative agreement with analytically expected relation that the stiffness r{sub}g and the displacement δ{sub}(cmax) are proportional to E'/p{sub}m and p{sub}m/E', respectively, where E' and p{sub}m are the equivalent Young's modulus and the hardness.
