Quantitative Evaluation of Torque and Motion Sensation of Hinges for Mobile PCs

This article describes the hinge torques required and measurements of the sensations of opening and closing mobile personal computers (PCs) in relation to the boundary lubrication of the hinge surfaces. We consider traction control technology for the arbitrary motion of a rotating-axis system designed so that the torque stability ensures long life. Our movement measurements of hinges assessed not only torque values but also carefully examined the feel of the movements. Analyzing the torque waveforms led to a new quantification algorithm for sensation inspection of the hinges. This was done with a new torque inspection tool that quantified the inspector's measurement movements. Supported by experimental evidence, our results can be applied to improve the performance and quality of torque hinges in mobile PCs, providing useful guidelines for hinge design.
