In my last article, I fixed some of the known issues with the Z-axis ball screw on my Tree Journeyman 330 milling machine. During the ball screw replacement, I noticed the drive belts were in bad shape and needed to be replaced. Many of the air hoses and coolant hoses were also cracked, and I plan on going through the machine and replacing these components before attempting any electrical work. Before diving into the electronics, I had to make a decision whether to try and fix what I had or replace it entirely. CNC controller technology has changed quite a bit since 1983. Gone are the punched tape drives, cassette drives (like the one on this machine), and disk drives found on older machines. By using standard computer hardware, the new controllers can communicate over computer networks and have the option of uploading and downloading programs via USB memory sticks.
