Because a 3D printer produces complex shapes without complex machining operations, I often find myself making repair parts that would require far too much effort with a lathe or milling machine. The oddly shaped post in Photo 1 rejoined a broom head broken from its handle, after about an hour each of 3D modeling and production. While I could make such a thing with subtractive machining, its much easier to have the printer crank out the result layer by layer.
