Sooner or later almost everyone ends up having to make an electromagnet for some project. For this task I use an old watchmaker's lathe set up with a DC motor, a spindle collar with an embedded magnet, and a "standardized" (for me, anyway) coil fixture mounted on the lathe (Photos 1 and 2). A wire spool holder and turns counter finishes my setup. Most of this is old school but the turns counter system may be of interest.
