Theory of Grease Lubrication

Looking up the term "theory" in Kojien (a famous Japanese dictionary), we find the following definitions: (1) Systematic and universal knowledge capable of explaining by the unifying of information and different facts, (2) True knowledge that disregards practice. In this case, on the one hand, it means advanced knowledge and, on the other hand, it means useless knowledge, (3) A specific point of view or theory of a scientist on certain problems. Considering point (1), it should be noticed that the grease lubrication problem is not covered by this definition only, but it certainly does not belong to the definition (2) and is related more closely to the definition in point (3). After different studies of grease for more than 40 years, an attempt to explain the general characteristics of lubrication by greases is a brave challenge.
