When we look at the history of rolling contact fatigue research concerning bearing steel, beginning with Hertz's contact theory at the end of the 19th century, now the basis is the calculation of the internal stress under the contact surface and the establishment of the bearing life formula in the 1950s by Lundberg-Palmgren. At that time, Lundberg-Palmgren considered the shear stress (hereafter called τ{sub}0) that acts parallel to the surface at the surface layer under the contact surface to be the stress that controls rolling contact fatigue. In 1960, Junkatsu, which is the forerunner of this journal, carried discussions concerning rolling contact fatigue life on a large scale. Later, however, there has been no full-scale discussion concerning the rolling contact fatigue mechanism, and the "τ{sub}0 theory" has come to be generally supported.
