Notes on the Challinae (Dermaptera, Pygidicranidae), with Descriptions of Three New Species from China, Korea and Japan

The genus Challia BURR, 1904 is reviewed. Three new species, C. gigantia sp. nov. from China and Korea, C. taewooi sp. nov. from Korea and C. imamurai sp. nov. from Japan were described. Totally seven species were recognized in the genus, and their distribution map and a key to the species were provided. The diagnostic characters of the subfamily Challinae and the genus Challia were re-defined. BURR (1904) established the genus Challia based on a species C. fletcheri BURR, 1904. In 1909, he had placed Challia in the subfamily Anataelinae together with the Canarian monotypic genus Anataelia BOLIVAR. This BURR'S classification, although the diagnosis of the subfamily or genera was modified by HINCKS (1937, 1959), had been accepted by many taxonomists. Later on, STEINMANN (1973b) established a new subfamily Challinae based on the genus Challia. He distinguished this subfamily from Anataelinae by the presence of arolium between claws and different distribution.
