Potentially bioactive phthalimidines are prepared in fair to good isolated yields by the 2 1:1 condensation reaction of o-phthalaldehyde with a variety of sterically-hindered primary alkyl amines in the presence of 1,2,3-1H-benzotriazole and 2-mercaptoethanol as dual synthetic auxiliaries.
