A study of the anodic oxidation of indolic compounds in the tetrahydro-beta-carboline series is described.Methoxylation at the alpha position of the C-3 indole ring was observed furnishing a convenient access to variously substituted products at that position.Nevertheless,this oxidation reaction was not general and very slight structural variation led to different chemical behavior corresponding to a formal oxidation of protonated tertiary amines.
