An unusual cascade reaction yielding ortho-peri-fused thienopyridopyrimidines

A cascade-like ring transformationof a thieno[2,3-d]pyridine derivative is reported and mechanistically explained.The product is a novel heterocyclic system consisting of a thiophene ring peri-fused with a pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidine moiety.Various derivatives of the new ring system were prepared.
