Brucellosis: A zoonotic infection and worldwide public health concern

Brucellosis is a common zoonotic infection that carries a high economic burden and is a public health concern worldwide. Although the infection is usually mild in humans, it can cause chronic debilitating symptoms or death. Brucellosis frequently presents as a nonspecific illness and may mimic other diseases. Clinicians may encounter brucellosis in occupationally exposed patients, international travelers, or military personnel returning from deployment to the Middle East or Southwest Asia.
