Americium Volatility from Ozonated Americium-Containing Alkaline Plutonium Solutions

Previously [1], we have demonstrated that the ozonation of alkaline solutions of Pu(VI) hydroxo complexes in combination with heating to 60—85°C is accompanied by volatilization of a plutonium compound. On the basis of some indirect evidence, it has been suggested that the volatile compound is plutonium tetroxide PuO4. The conclusion about the composition of the volatile compound is mainly based on the current belief that its existence is possible [2,3]. In addition, the analogy with the behavior of other readily volatile and sublimable M(VIII) derivatives, OsO4 and RuO4, has been taken into account. It is worth noting that both RuO4 and OsO4 can evaporate on weak heating from their complexes existing in solutions in the presence of strong oxidants.
