A key step in the mechanism of reaction of Group III-IV metal halides with o-quinones is the formation of molecular complexes of α-diketones with Lewis acids. Previously it was shown that the reactions of p-chloranil, 1,2-naphthoquinone, 9,10-phenan-threnequinone, 3,6- and 3,5-di-tert-butyl-o-benzo-quinones with the halides MX_n (M = Al, Ga, Y, In, La, Si, Sn; X = Cl, Br, I, F; n = 3, 4) give paramagnetic o-semiquinone metal complexes [1-8], the halide ion being oxidized.
