The ATM runner design philosophy was featured in the January 2008 issue of DCE [Gunasegaram et. al., 2008a] where the underpinning science and the benefits accruing to die casters embracing it were discussed in detail. The readers were also presented with examples of commercial applications of ATM. In the present follow-up article, the authors describe in detail how two magnesium alloy steering wheel armature castings (Figure 1) commercially produced in Australia benefited from the application of the philosophy. Also, aspects that make ATM a leaner and greener variation of the traditional HPDC process are highlighted.
