A project to upgrade the air handling units (AHUs) at Manchester Airport with low-voltage drives and high-efficiency motors is saving the airport 4GWh a year, as well as cutting its CO_2 emissions by more than 2,000 tonnes. "The Airport has a commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2015," explains its service facilities manager, Andy Sheridan. "Together with our need to reduce costs and our environmental commitments, looking to improve the air handling in the terminals was an obvious choice." The project involved replacing the drives and motors in 95 AHUs in the airport's three terminals. Each AHU contains two pairs of motors and drives - one for supply, the other for extraction - with the motors ranging in size from 3-90kW.
