Mesalazine formulations exert their effect in ulcerative colitis from the luminal side. Failure with mesalazine treatment thus reflects the nature of the disease, noncompliance or insufficient exposure of the colon to mesalazine with currently available controlled-release and azo-bonded prodrug formulations. Efforts to optimise release formulations are thus welcome and the Multi Matrix System (MMX?) mesalazine is an inventive approach that combines lipophilic and hydrophilic matrices coated with a polymer that is resistant to dissolution at low pH
