Mac whacks 50% off its fan bills

By fitting inverter drives to the kitchen extractor fans at 50 of its restaurants across the UK, MacDonald's has halved its electricity bills for running the fans. Variable speed control has also cured a problem that was affecting the operation of cooking equipment in the hamburger chain's kitchens. To keep cooking smells within the kitchen area, McDonald's aims to replace 85% of the air it extracts via air-conditioning plant. The high extraction rates were creating an imbalance that meant that whenever an external door or window was opened, there was a rush of cold air into the kitchen, affecting the energy consumption of the equipment as it attempted to maintain the correct temperature.
