With the ever-escalating cost of energy, the growing interest in the highly energy-intensive unit operation of drying is hardly surprising. The First International Symposium on Drying was organized to foster international cooperation and provide an effective forum for university-industry interaction on a truly global scale. To my knowledge, it is the first event of its kind. It is also unique in that it is cosponsored by a number of professional societies as well as industries located in Canada and the U.S.A. I wish to record my gratitude to all the cosponsors for their assistance in various ways, which contributed to its success. The assistance of the National Research Council of Canada in the form of a Conference Grant to partially support the Keynote Lecture program is gratefully acknowledged.
